Leadership:
December 31, 2020
Happy New Year to each of you.
As 2020 comes to an end and 2021 begins, I am humbled by my observations of this past year. In the face of relentless change, uncertainty and adversity each of you has shown growth and development as a leader.
As one of the core principles and the foundation of our Fellowship Mission, we strive to nurture the future academic leaders in Gastroenterology. What we do beyond that is to support leadership in all aspects of your life.
You are leaders with your patients, you are leaders with friends and families, you are leaders in your personal emotional and spiritual world and you are leaders in your professional careers. I am proud of each of you.
For 2021, I would like to continue Leadership as a theme. During the year I will borrow and share with you wisdom from a book given to me by my stepson Brent: The Language of Influence and Personal Power (316 Insights for Life and Leading) by Scott Hagan.

“The 2 doors
The most beautiful thing in life is opportunity.
When the desire to do something meets the possibility for it to happen, the human heart comes alive.
Opportunity, however, usually presents itself through two vastly different doors. You look through the first door and say,” I can make this opportunity great.”
Why?
Because you already possess what it takes to succeed on the other side. In other words, the opportunity needs you.
But when you look through the second door, you see something far different. You see a much greater risk and say to yourself, “I must become great to succeed.”
Always choose the second door.
Through the first door you bring who you already are, but through the second door, you bring the potential of what you must become.”
